What is Destructive entry?
Destructive entry (or forced entry) is a method of entry characterized by damage to or destruction of a lock, safe, or surrounding objects, such as a door, window, or wall. Destructive entry is the opposite of Non-destructive entry systems.
- Chemicals: Use of chemicals to affect the molecular structure of the locking system.
- Compression: Use of applied pressure on locking systems in complementary directions. Opposite of tensile pressure.
- Impact: The use of pressure and shock on a locking system. Most commonly used are sledgehammers and small, controlled explosives.
- Shearing: Applied pressure on two opposite edges of a locking system.
- Temperature: The use of extreme temperatures to affect the molecular structure of a locking system. This can include both heating up and cooling down.
- Tension: Use of applied pressure on locking systems in opposite directions. Opposite of compressive pressure
- Torsion: The use of rotational pressure (torque) to twist and shear a locking system.
What is Non-destructive entry?
Non-destructive entry refers to a variety of methods of entry used to gain access to a container (building, room, safe, etc.) without causing damage to the container or affecting its normal operation. Non-destructive entry is the opposite of Destructive entry systems.
- Lockpicking: Involved using lock picks and other tools to manipulate the internal tumblers of a lock to gain access.
- Impressioning: Involves using a medium (such as clay) to take an impression of an existing key to create a new copy.
- Bypass: Occurs when a lock is compromised without affecting the integrity of the lock itself.
- Key bumping: A covert entry technique used to quickly open pin-tumbler based locks. Makes use of a key blank to apply internal force to the tumbler mechanism.
- Decoding: The process of determining the correct position of components in a lock through manipulation, disassembly, measurement and observation.
- Shimming: Padlock shimming is the most common shimming technique. Invloves taking a small piece of metal and separating the locking bolt form the shackle in a padlock.
